THE IMPORTANCE OF LABORATORY ERROR MONITORING IN CLINICAL LABORATORY MANAGEMENT

summary

Clinical laboratory tests present indivisible part in clinical diagnostic. Majority, approximately 60-70% of important decisions in diagnostics are based on various tests performed in laboratories. Considering the role that these tests have in clinical medicine, it is clear that their reliability is highly important.

Standardization, automation and technological advances highly improved analytical reliability of laboratory tests, however laboratory errors still occur daily at all stages of the total testing process.

Managing and preventing these errors are one of the most important jobs that lab managers have.

At any stage during testing process, lab errors have serious consequences, it calls for sample rejection, which leads to collecting new samples and repeating the testing, therefore results are delayed. As stated previously, lab tests play important role in diagnosis, so delays in results can have major influence on patient’s health.

Producing reliable test result with minimal TAT and cost is the main objective of any clinical laboratory, therefore monitoring of lab errors and quality control are important challenges that lab managers face.
